Fordite Cuff
Fordite
Fordite is layers of enamel paint that built up on the tracks and skids of automobile factories. The layers were hardened repeatedly in the ovens that the car bodies went into to cure the paint. Eventually, the paint build-up would become obstructing, or too thick and heavy, and had to be removed. Some crafty workers with an eye for beauty realized that this unique byproduct was thick enough to make use of. It was super-cured, patterned like pychedelic agate, and could be cut and polished with relative ease.
Due to improvements in painting technology Fordite is no longer created. We have pieces salvaged from the Dagenham, England Ford factory in the late 1970's and the Rouge River Plant in Dearborn, Michigan in the late 1960's and 1970's.
